Feed people
not factory farms

We need a fair food and farming plan and your voice counts

Food is a basic human right, yet millions go hungry while precious resources are wasted feeding animals trapped in factory farms.

Industrial animal agriculture is not only the biggest cause of animal cruelty on the planet, but it also drives environmental destruction, climate change and worsens global food insecurity.

It’s time to reform our food system. Demand world leaders deliver a fair food and farming transition that prioritises food for people, not factory farms.

Why we must stop feeding the problem: Factory Farming

The world is facing a growing food security crisis.

Farmers produce enough food to feed almost twice the global population, yet 1 in 10 people go hungry in the world. 40% of the world’s grains, and an estimated 90% of the wild fish used in feeds could be eaten directly by people. Instead, they are diverted to feed billions of land and aquatic animals in intensive factory farming systems.

This is a hugely inefficient system, because for every 100 calories fed to animals in the form of human-edible crops, we receive just 30 calories in the form of meat and dairy products.

Factory farming not only exacerbates global hunger, but where there is an over reliance on animal products there is often a lack in dietary diversity, rising rates of obesity and other chronic diseases. So, while millions go hungry, others eating industrial food from factory farms can be over-fed and malnourished.

We need to END.IT—end the wasteful and harmful practices of factory farming and unsustainable aquaculture, and shift to compassionate, sustainable, nature-positive farms.

By transforming the way we produce and consume food, we can make sure everyone has healthy, sustainable and affordable food and ensure a fair and secure food system for all.

There is something wrong with our world when millions of people go hungry every day, yet there is more than enough food to go round. Our food and farming systems are harmful to our health, that of the planet and are the cause of enormous animal cruelty.

A food transformation

Imagine a world where nutritious, diverse diets rich in whole grains, fruits and vegetables are accessible and affordable for everyone. This would reduce the consumption and production of animal-sourced foods, freeing up land to allow forest, grassland, and wetlands to regenerate, restoring wildlife and biodiversity.

Transitioning away from industrial animal agriculture would also allow resources to be redirected towards regenerative practices that produce nutritious food while being both productive and in harmony with nature. These nature-positive farms provide higher standards of animal welfare and reduce the risks of diseases associated with animals confined in factory farms.

We’re building a global movement of citizens and organisations, united in our call for world leaders to transform the way we produce and consume food. Together, we can create a food system that nourishes both people and the planet.

Petition to world leaders

There is an urgent need to transform the food system. If the global community is to meet the Sustainable Development Goals, the Paris Climate Agreement targets and the goals of the Convention on Biological Diversity, action must be taken to end intensive animal farming.

We, the undersigned, call on world leaders to develop a Global Agreement on food and farming for adoption by the United Nations General Assembly, with the objective being to move away from industrial animal agriculture and:

  • Shift to nature-positive farming systems that help restore biodiversity and soils and keep the global increase in average temperatures below 1.5˚C.
  • Reverse over-reliance on animal protein in high consuming populations and support equitable, secure access to nutritious food.
  • Ensure a just transition to a global food system that provides fair livelihoods for farmers and protects the rights of indigenous peoples, women, and vulnerable communities.
  • Achieve a financial and regulatory environment which helps to secure the above transition.
  • Deliver high standards of farmed animal welfare.
